Stand your ground soldier.
Fight back-fight back,
Even though you are out-numbered,
And out-matched.

Stand your ground soldier.
Don’t give up,
They’re closing in on you;
Your team-mates have fallen,
left you to perish alone.

Discouraged,
You are not,
Fighting alone is what you do best,
You keep fighting on,
Even when death is the final outcome.

Stand down soldier.
Why do you keep pushing yourself?
Beaten and battered,
Yet never learning to stay down.

You arrogant fool!

You can’t continuously do this to yourself!

Open your eyes soldier!
Don’t you see you’re blind?
You say you’re alone,
With no one to hold,
And yet you have many people holding you tightly.

Stay down soldier!
Don’t get up again.
Bloody, beaten and alone,
You’ve run your body to the ground,
You’re loved one is calling out to you,
Why don’t you respond?

Get up soldier!
You’re going home.
Back to your wife and son.
Now live happily and love one another,
With all your heart, mind, strength and soul.

You’re home now soldier.
You don’t need to fight anymore.

I'm a new member and was randomly browsing the group's folder and found this poem. :) I love everything war-related, novels, poetry, etc.

And I enjoyed what you did here. I think you kept the form enough (even though it is free verse) for it to be a poem, not a prose. The message is quite straightforward - during a war it is indeed easy to forget you have a family who loves you and feel utterly alone/separated. I wonder if the feeling of solitude also came from the fact that his family/friends might not understand what it means to fight and fight for one's life.

I have only one constructive remark: a typo. In this line 'You’re loved one is calling out to you,' 'You're' should be 'Your' I believe.

One of my fav. war poems is 'In Flanders Fields...'. Just curious if you read it. :)

Thank you for the constructive remark. It is very much appreciated. ^J^

And is indeed in the eyes of a solder, but my main purpose of my poem is actually my life, in the form of a solder in war.

I will read it! ^^ thank you for the favorite.

A well done poem. I too have written of the horrors of war and honor. Good job. My only problem is soldier is mispelled.
